Two Pretorians to be awarded National Orders

TV actress, author and advocate Nakedi Ribane and former deputy chief justice Dikgang Moseneke will be honoured with National Orders.

Veteran TV actress, author and now advocate Nakedi Ribane and former deputy chief justice Dikgang Moseneke are among people to be honoured with National Orders this weekend.

Born in Ga-Sekhukhuni and raised in Mamelodi outside Pretoria, Ribane started her modelling career in the early 1980s and advanced quickly to become one of South Africa’s most popular top models.

She acted in local TV drama Molo Fish and international feature films including Ninja IV, Backlash, and Waat.

Ribane is most famous for her role in SABC Encore’s Sepedi drama Bophelo ke Semphekgo. She also hosted a talk show on SABC 2 called Motswako.

Ribane became an advocate at the age of 59, two years ago.

Moseneke started his professional career as an attorney’s clerk at Klagbruns Inc in Pretoria in 1976, according to the website SA History Online.

“In 1978, he was admitted as an attorney and practised for five years as a partner at the law firm Maluleke, Seriti and Moseneke.”

In 1983, Moseneke began to practise as an advocate in Johannesburg and Pretoria and in 1993, he was elevated to senior counsel.

He was appointed deputy chief justice of the Republic of South Africa in 2005 by former president Jacob Zuma.

Now retired, Moseneke was the arbitrator in the Life Esidimeni hearings earlier this year.

Moseneke will be awarded the Order of Luthuli for his contribution to the field of law and the administration of justice in South Africa, while Ribane will receive the Order of Ikhamanga, which recognises South African citizens who have excelled in the fields of arts, culture, literature, music, journalism and sport.

National Orders are the highest awards that South Africa bestows on citizens and members of the international community, who have contributed meaningfully towards making the country a free, democratic and successful nation.
