Closure of Overkruin library explained
Negotiations are underway to secure a new property where the library will be reopened.
Multiple problems are to blame for the temporary closure of the Overkruin Library in Sinoville in December, says the metro.
Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo this week said these included occupational health and safety issues.
Another reason was a lease agreement lapse.
“The Overkruin Library was located in Sinoville Centre, which is privately owned, the lease agreement had lapsed and there were various issues in dispute between the City and the property owner in this regard,” he said.
A Rekord reader has queried the extended shutdown without any explanation from the metro.
“We, as members of the library get the impression that the reason for the shutdown is a state secret and we wonder if it will ever be reopened,” said the reader.
“We now have to go to libraries which are far away and not entirely reachable.”
Mashigo said negotiations were underway to secure a new property where the library would be reopened.
“The City, therefore, took a decision to source a different facility to house the library, space has been identified, and negotiations are currently underway with the property owner,” he said.
“A supply chain process is also underway to finalise this agreement.”
