UPDATE: No arrests after Hercules mob attack

‘Would-be thief’ was stoned to death by angry mob while two others escaped.

Arrests are yet to be made after a mob justice death in Gomorrah informal settlement in the west of Pretoria last week.

Hercules police spokesperson Captain Bonginkosi Msimango said the victim was a suspected would-be thief.

He was stoned to death as his accomplices fled the scene last Tuesday.

“It is alleged that the man and his accomplices wanted to rob a spaza shop in the area when the attack happened,” said Bonginkosi Msimango.

He said residents joined in the deadly attack on him.

Four police officers trying to rescue the man were slightly injured in an altercation with residents.

Msimango said no arrests were made but the investigation was ongoing.

He condemned the unlawful act of mob justice.
