Foetus found at dumping site

The Mamelodi police have been criticised for leaving a foetus found at the Heatherly Dumping Site for two days without protecting the scene from contamination.
According to a witness, people scavenging for recyclable material at this dumping site near Nellmapius found the foetus wrapped in a blanket on Monday and reported it to the police.
“The police came to the scene but soon left without doing anything to prevent people from contaminating the crime-scene.
Instead they told dumpsite staff the forensic pathologist was on the way and they could not wait,” said the witness adding that the police had returned the following day after staff complained the foetus remained uncollected.
Police spokesperson Captain Michael Mbewe confirmed the discovery was reported to the police.
“The report was logged on Monday night and the police came but because it was dark and the foetus was covered by waste, they could not find it so they left to return the following morning,” said Mbewe.
He confirmed a foetus had been found and that an inquest docket was open for investigation.
“No one has been arrested and anyone who has information that could help the investigation must call the police on 08600-10111.”
