Metro to write off 50% of north debt, but…
Residents were urged to grab the opportunity and make the payment arrangements at their nearest walk-in centre.
Tshwane metro has promised to write off 50 percent of the water and sanitation debt of residents in multiple neighbourhoods in the north of Pretoria. But there is a condition.
Residents owing monies to the metro must first settle the outstanding debts in full for the next six months.
The metro said it would write off the other 50 percent should residents in Mabopane, Winterveld and Ga-Rankuwa (Mawiga) continue to pay their accounts in full for another six months.

“The solution to dealing effectively with the debt will, however, require co-operation between the city of Tshwane and affected households. If you settle your monthly/current water and sanitation account in full for the next six months, we will write off 50% of your old debt. If you continue to pay your monthly/current account in full for another 6 months we will then write off the remaining 50%, completely getting rid of the debt,” the metro said in a statement.
Residents were urged to grab the opportunity and make the payment arrangements at their nearest walk-in centre.
The opportunity, however, was limited to specific residents.
“Residents should note that this debt-write off applies only to Mawiga residents who were previously serviced by Sandspruit Works Association (SWA) and is only for water and sanitation. Credit control action will be implemented against other outstanding amounts owed to the city of Tshwane.”
The announcement came after the metro committed to assisting Mawiga residents with non-payment of water and sanitation when it took over from the SWA.
“The Tshwane municipality always strives to attend to and resolve issues raised by its residents in a way that demonstrates that it puts them first.”
It acknowledged that it worked towards achieving a good relationship with communities as well as having healthy and beneficial relationships with them.
