The Lyttelton police in Centurion said there has been a decrease in crime in the area recently, especially in so-called crime “hotspots”.
“We can see that high police visibility around those areas is fruitful,” police spokesman Captain Dave Miller told Rekord.
Miller said West Street, where the Gautrain station and the home affairs offices are situated, is a major crime hotspot.
He said more crime could be prevented if residents were more alert.

Miller said theft from motor vehicles may be attributed to the fact that often laptops, cellphones and other valuable items are clearly visible inside cars.
“It is a major concern that the public is so careless with their own property. If the criminals see it, they will break into your vehicle to steal it.”
Miller said Lyttelton station commander, Brigadier Themba Maduna is sticking to his promise to go after criminals.
“However, the public must start playing their part in crime prevention as well.”
