More than 16 dogs were killed by poison in Pretoria East between March and April.
The SPCA has urged dog owners who suspect their dogs have been poisoned to immediately take their pets to the vet.
This follows a spike in dog poisonings in Grootfontein, Waterkloof Glen, Moreleta Park and Garsfontein.
Last week more than six such cases were reported to animal rescue centre, Pretoria Animal Buddies.
According to the centre, more than 16 dogs were killed by poison in Grootfontein in March and April.
SPCA spokesperson Christine Masemola said the most common method people used to kill dogs was by poisoning.
“Often by criminals who need to silence a barking dog or in neighbourly disputes,” she said.
The most common type of poison used was Aldicarb also known as two-step, a pesticide available as a black powder sold in the black-market at taxi ranks and train stations.
“Other poisons used include strychnine, rat poison and fertilisers,” she said adding that pet-owners who suspected their dogs were killed by poison should take some caution.
“Wear a plastic apron, gloves and mask to handle the carcass.
If your dog shows symptoms of poisoning, immediately take it to the vet.”
She advised pet owners to keep a list of clinics and vets open 24 hours a day.
“Make sure that you have the numbers of these facilities so you can contact them ASAP if your pet has been poisoned. Some poisoning need lifesaving treatments that only a vet can give.”
