UPDATE: Police investigating horror breeding in the north
A court order was obtained to rehome the 100 neglected dogs.
A resident in the north of Pretoria accused of neglecting over 100 animals has not yet been brought to book for her actions.
In March, Wet Nose organisation filed a criminal complaint of animal neglect and cruelty at the Kameeldrift police, after confiscating 100 neglected chihuahuas from an abandoned building in Buffelsdrift.
A woman, believed to be the owner of the dogs as well as an untold number of cats kept on the premises, had previously been charged with animal abuse in 2006.
She stood trial and was released by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on a warning.
During Wet Nose and Tshwane SPCA’s visit to Buffelsdrift in March, the dogs were found in horrendous conditions, and several of the animals had to be treated for various diseases.
After confiscating the dogs, Wet Nose obtained a court order to rehome them.
Kameeldrift police confirmed that they were still investigating but the owner had not yet been charged.
Animal activist Herman H le Roux spoke out about the “poor justice system when it comes to the rights of animals”.
“We (animal activists) have been fighting for years to get proper justice for animals,” he said.
“Animals have the ability to think and feel as humans do, and yet there are no laws to protect them from people who would abuse them.”
