UPDATE: Metro cops investigated for bribery
The metro cops were arrested in Sunnyside for allegedly trying to take bribe from a truck driver.
The two metro police officers arrested on Friday on suspicion of bribery are being investigated.
Metro police spokesperson Senior Superintend Isaac Mahamaba said on Monday that the two were nabbed by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) anti-corruption unit.
“As the city of Tshwane, we have zero tolerance for corruption and we want the law to take its course,” he said.
“We will comply with the investigations from the authorities (IPID and RTMC) as soon as we receive the copy of the docket or the report from RTMC, we will as the department look into the possibilities of opening a case against them internally as well,” he said.
On social media, Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga said the duo were apparently not satisfied with a R1 000 bribe from the truck owner.
“They said it wasn’t enough and went to meet with the truck owner at McDonald’s in Sunnyside for R2 000,” said Msimanga.
The truck driver alerted the management corporation and the two were arrested.
They were scheduled to appear in court soon.
