NEWSFLASH: ANC councillor shot dead in north of Pretoria
The party condemned the killing saying it was "distraught".
An ANC ward councillor has been shot dead in Soshanguve, the party confirmed.
ANC Tshwane in a terse statement confirmed Siphiwe Montlha was killed on Tuesday evening in block VV.
The party condemned the killing saying it was “distraught”.
“Comrade Siphiwe was an organic product of the congress movement, he served his community and the movement from an early age with absolute dedication and commitment. Among various roles he played, was district chairperson of the Young Communist League, secretary of sub-district of the SACP, branch chairperson of the ANC and also branch secretary of the ANC,” the ANC said.
The ANC said in 2011 it and the community had asked Montlha to stand as ward 37 councillor for the municipal election and was elected then subsequently reelected in 2016.
The ANC said Montlha’s death will leave a very big void in the hearts of those that served with him in council, as he enthusiastically served in various committees with eagerness and a great sense of duty.
“I am truly saddened by this tragic loss of one of our own, and pray to God that he should give us strength and courage to pull through this difficult time” a visibly shaken ANC council chief whip Aaron Maluleke said.
“As the ANC, we send our sincere and deepest condolences to his family and friends. We ask the entire community of Tshwane and the Congress Movement to be in prayer with his wife and children as they grieve.”
The party said funeral arrangements would be communicated in due course.
“May your revolutionary soul ever rest in peace our dear comrade,” read the statement.
