As the cash-in-transit heists in the province become more brazen and an everyday thing, the Hawks have issued tips to citizens who find themselves caught up in a craze.
Spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu said there were three important factors to consider:
– Your safety first
“Find a place of safety, preferably further from the situation and hide.”
– Don’t try and be a hero
Bystanders must not attempt to confront the attackers as they may be heavily armed.
“And taking a video for social media should be the last thing on your mind. This could put your life at risk especially if the attackers notice you are filming.”
“Your safety comes first.”

– Do not be tempted
Do not take the money at the scene.
Mulamu said people must avoid touching or tampering with anything that could be evidence, including the money.
“Do not get tempted to pick-up any of the notes, you will find yourself on the wrong side of the law if you do.”
Mulalmu said the Hawks along with Crime Intelligence had prioritised the investigations into the recent heists in the province and would make sure the perpetrators were caught.
No arrest has been made yet in relation to the four recent heists east of Pretoria.
