Silverton police coming after criminals
A 29-year-old man was sentenced to15 years for an armed robbery he committed in Nellmapius in 2015.
Silverton police have sent a stern warning to armed robbers in the area.
Police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said the police were out in full force to ensure that criminals faced the full might of the law.
This comes after a 29-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years for the armed robbery and attempted murder he committed in Nellmapius in 2015.
The Pretoria magistrate’s court on Thursday found Samuel Mtsweni guilty of armed robbery and attempted murder after he and a group of accomplices robbed a shop of about R3 000 and two cellphones.
“During the robbery, a customer walked in and he was also robbed of the R100 he had intended to use in the shop,” said Sepato.
The group then forced the owner of the store to hand over his car keys and when he refused, they shot at him after assaulting him.
Mtsweni was left behind as his accomplices fled in the stolen Audi.
“Members of the community heard what was going on and started chasing the group, who then sped off in the victim’s car, leaving Mtsweni behind.”
Sepato said the sentence should show criminals that the law would not allow criminals to flourish without penalty.
Mtsweni refused to give police any information that could lead to the arrest of his accomplices, but police were hard at work to pin them down.
“Criminals must know that they will end up in jail for their crimes because we will find them,” Sepato said.
He said even though the case had taken years, the police were grateful to the public for their help since the incident took place.
