UPDATE: No arrest in north councillor’s killing
The ANC ward councillor was shot and killed in an apparent ambush.
Police have confirmed reports that an ANC ward councillor has been shot dead in an apparent ambush in Soshanguve on Tuesday evening.
Police spokesperson Captain Matthews Nkoadi said Siphiwe Montlha, a councillor of ward 37 in Soshanguve, was killed at block VV.
The killing happened shortly after the councillor had attended a meeting in block H.
The meeting wrapped up at around 20:00.
Montlha and a friend then went by car to inspect a stand at block VV where a house was apparently being built.
When Montlha got out of the car, he was shot at by two suspects who were apparently waiting for him inside the yard, police said.

As the men fled the scene, they spotted the passenger in the councillor’s car and shot him in the thigh.
The attackers made their getaway in a Honda Ballade.
The councillor died at the scene while the man who was in the councillor’s car was rushed to hospital.
No suspects have been made and the matter is still under investigation.
Police would not comment on whether Monthla’s killing was politically motivated.
The DA strongly condemned Montlha’s killing in a statement.
“We convey our condolences to the ANC, friends and family of Councillor Monthla during this difficult time,” it said.
“This latest incident brings the number of political killings in the area to three, following the killing of two other ANC councillors in 2006,” the DA said.
“We call for an urgent investigation so that those guilty of this heinous crime can be brought to justice. Those who attack and murder fellow citizens, be they public representatives or not, must be stopped in their tracks to face to the full might of the law.”
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to Councillor Montlha’s family, friends, community members as well as to his colleagues in the City of Tshwane Council.”
