Spare wheel theft on the rise in the east

Brooklyn police have cautioned vehicle owners in the area to invest in spare wheel lock anti-theft devices.
This is after at least eight spare wheels were reported stolen at the station over the past month, according to police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach.
Weilbach said opportunistic criminals were targeting popular bakkie models and other vehicles for their spare wheels.
“Most of the spare wheels were stolen in parking areas at shopping centres in broad daylight,” she told Rekord.
Additional safety measures would deter thieves, she said.
“They would also save vehicle owners any replacement and repair costs, as thieves sometimes damage tailgates and bumpers when stealing spare wheels.”
Motorists were advised to park in areas where their vehicles would be clearly visible to the public eye and close to any CCTV cameras or security guards.
“Remember to remove all loose items from a parked vehicle,” she said.
“Too often laptops, cellphones, handbags, sports bags and other items are stolen out of vehicles.”
Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious persons or vehicles to the police immediately by phoning 10111 or contacting Brooklyn police at their 24-hour number at 012-366-1735/6.
