UPDATE: No one killed in police shootout in Pta Moot
Reports from other media that a homeowner was shot and killed have been denied by the Hawks.
The Hawks on Friday morning denied that a homeowner was shot and killed in a police shootout in the Moot on Thursday evening.
This comes after other media reported that police officers tracking a gang of cash-in-transit robbers have killed a Pretoria homeowner and apparently critically injured his family after they apparently stormed the wrong house. The report also stated that two joggers were also shot and injured in the exchange of gunfire.
Hawks spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu denied this.
She said: “The homeowner was not shot but taken in for questioning.”
According to Mulamu two people were injured in a shootout with the police in the Moot on Thursday evening around 18:30 following a high-speed chase of a stolen vehicle. Another person was arrested.
She said the vehicle was then allegedly involved in an accident on the corner of Grant and Barret streets in Moregloed, after which shots were fired.
It was suspected that the suspects shot at by police had been involved in cash in transit robberies – but it could not immediately be confirmed.
According to Mulamu, only two people were injured in a police shootout in the Moot on Thursday evening. The two injured people were taken to hospital under police surveillance.
It was earlier reported that one man had died in the shootout but was later discovered he had survived.
Kilnerpark Security (KPS) spokesperson Ancelize van der Kooi said it was chaos on the scene on Thursday evening.
“When the suspects fled, they apparently jumped over fences and police pursued,” she said.
“The suspect that was shot, was thought to be dead at first as he sustained very serious injuries.”
