UPDATE: Woman shot at seven times believes it was mistake

"God saved me and the true person that was supposed to have been killed on Wednesday afternoon.”

The east woman shot at on the N14 no longer believes she was the target of a “hit”.

Sherley van Niekerk (54) was fired at seven times by occupants of a passing car on Wednesday while driving on the N14 from Pretoria in what she now believed “was a case of mistaken identity”.

She told Rekord she had no enemies hence there was no reason to suspect a “hit”.

“I do believe after my counselling session that the hit was a mistaken identity case.

I don’t believe anyone would want to kill me, I do not believe I have enemies, not in the workplace or at home.”

Van Niekerk had previously said she thought the shooting was related to her work as a finance manager at West Rand District Municipality.

A stance that has since changed.

“Yes, I do have strong standpoints when reviewing my work, but I honestly do not believe that anyone would want to kill me or remove me from my position so that they could put a corrupt official in my place,” she said.

She insisted that if she was targeted for her position, the shooters would only have scared her “by firing one or two shots at my car, not seven”.

“I do not believe that this hit was work related, it wasn’t meant for me.

God saved me and the true person that was supposed to have been killed on Wednesday afternoon.”

Van Niekerk was unharmed but received counselling for the trauma.
