Mother and son start campaign to help nyaope addicts

They have dressed six newborns, donated clothes to four shelters, dressed two child-headed households and given jeans and sneakers to 30 addicts.

A Soshanguve mother and son team has started a campaign to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

Pastor Letta Malala and son Khutsi started Di Chomi [friends] to collect winter clothes, blankets and food parcels for the poor.

“The social media-driven campaign was initially aimed at nyaope addicts at Mabopane stations but soon grew as locals started donating,” said Khutsi.

He said Di Chomi took a life of its own when he posted a picture of the people he had helped on Facebook.

“Me and my mom were concerned about how cold it was this year and after we donated some clothes to addicts, I started getting inbox messages from my Facebook friends telling me that they also have stuff they would like to give away,” he said.

“When we collected the clothes, we discovered there were even baby clothes. I then asked my friends if they know any infants we could assist with baby clothes. I then got several inboxes about infant babies who have no clothes. It has been a humbling experience because I didn’t know there are so many less fortunate people in our communities,” he said.

Since the pair started Di Chomi they have dressed six newborns, donated clothes to four shelters, dressed two child-headed households and given jeans and sneakers to 30 addicts at the station.

Malala said because Di Chomi donated people they didn’t know, they encouraged their donors to take a picture of themselves with their donation to show to the recipient and vice versa.

“It’s done in the spirit of creating new friendships,” he said adding next for them was a monthly soup kitchen from end May till July.

“Here we will introduce these new friends – the donors and recipients – to each other. We have already have some who have pledged assist with funds for the kitchen. But we need more donations or sponsors to further assist us with running this soup kitchen,” said Malala.

The drive was initially aimed at benefiting Bluetooth nyaope addicts who reside at Mabopane stations but it turned into a community initiative when people started donating clothes for kids and families.

The campaign is aimed at helping the less fortunate community members with warm winter clothes, blankets and food parcels.
