AfriForum tackles police minster over farm murders

AfriForum has declared war on police minister Bheki Cele for not treating farm murders as a priority, the organisation said.
This is according to a statement released by AfriForum head of safety Ian Cameron today.
“Despite more than 195 farm attacks this year the minister of police still refuses to declare farm murders priority crimes,” the statement read.
“This silence and apathy are indicative that government is, in fact, deprioritising farm murders and attacks as crimes.”
The statement came after a meeting between Cele and top crime intelligence officers on Tuesday.
During the meeting, he identified four priority crimes that require government’s urgent attention.

These priority crimes are political killings, taxi violence, gangsterism and cash-in-transit heists.
“He did not even mention farm murders,” said Cameron.
Cameron said this indicates the government’s lack of attention to the extent of the crisis.
“Yesterday I visited the scene where Fanie (78) and Colleen (74) Engelbrecht were brutally tortured and murdered on 13 May this year,” Cameron said.
“Colleen was burned with a clothing iron before she was strangled and her throat cut.
“This is but one of the striking example of a family that was destroyed because of the state’s inability to protect people in rural areas.”
