Government offers firearm amnesty
"The police will have no mercy on people who unlawfully possess firearms thereafter."
The government has approved a firearm amnesty in a bid to address the large number of firearms circulating in South Africa in wrong hands, contributing to crime.
Information on how the process would unfold, as well as the dates, would be announced in due course, the cabinet decided.
Police said in a statement: “Communities will be urged to voluntarily surrender their legal and illegal firearms and will be provided amnesty for possession of illegal firearms.”
Police said the aim of the amnesty was to:
– Reduce the number of illegal firearms
– Provide owners with the opportunity to hand in unwanted firearms
– Prevent crime and violence and promote safety
– Address the fundamental causes of crime, in order to effectively protect communities, and
– Ensure the citizens felt safe and had no fear of crime.
