Cable theft has once again left parts of the north of Pretoria without power, a local councillor has said.
Arnold van Niekerk said cable thieves caused a blackout in Onderstepoort, Pretoria North, Doornpoort, Montana and Sinoville on Wednesday morning.
Van Niekerk said large parts of Doornpoort, Montana, the University of Pretoria and the veterinary faculty at Onderstepoort were affected.
“Repair teams are on the scenes to replace the stolen cables,” he said adding that the estimated restoration time was at 18:00.
The Tshwane metro last month said it had a plan to combat “the ongoing scourge of cable theft in the north”.
“We are appointing a service provider to guard and patrol our assets including substations, transformer stations, reservoirs and treatment plants,” said MMC for infrastructure and utility services Darryl Moss.
He said the metro was putting in place other security measures including the installation of beams, cameras and alarms to fight cable theft.
He was unable to provide a timeline for implementation.
