Stolen Eersterust property retrieved – before victim reports crime

A 52-year-old Eersterust resident couldn’t believe his luck last week when he came to report a theft only to find his property already waiting for him at the police station.
Eersterust police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Shibambo said around 05:30 on Friday, the police on patrol had spotted a suspicious man walking in PS Fourie Street.
“The 32-year-old was struggling with some heavy luggage,” Shibambo said.
“The police stopped to ask him what he was carrying.”
Shibambo said when the man failed to give a satisfactory answer, he was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property.
“An hour later, a distraught resident came to the police station to report a theft out of a motor vehicle that occurred at his place in Odile Street,” he said.
“According to his statement to the police, his company vehicle was broken into and all his work equipment to the value of R20 000 has been stolen.
The description of the stolen items matched those the police had seized from the suspect earlier.
Unbeknownst to him, the police were waiting for such a report since a suspect was already in custody for possession of the same equipment.

The 52-year-old resident thanked the police for their diligent work and praised them for a job well done.
Police are investigating whether the suspect can be linked to other cases of theft out of motor vehicles in the area.
