Vehicle thieves active in Pta North
“My car was stolen even with security guards standing watch.”
A spate of vehicle thefts in the north of Pretoria has prompted a fresh police campaign.
This week, Pretoria North police distributed informational pamphlets to create the awareness of theft from and of vehicles in the community.
Resident Lucky Redebe told Rekord recently he was a victim of car theft this month.
“I parked my car in a secure parking lot in Wonderboom,” he said.
“Even with security guards standing watch, my car was still stolen.”
Police spokesperson Captain Rebecca Phatlane said more motorists, like Radebe, reported stolen vehicles or theft from vehicles at seemingly secure parking lots.
“Thefts were reported mostly at shopping centres – especially in Gerrit Maritz, Ben Viljoen and Emily Hobhouse streets,” she said.
“As a preventative measure, car and security guards in the affected areas were vetted by police on Tuesday, 8 May and again on Tuesday the following week.”
Phatlane said meetings were also held with the management of the three shopping centres mostly affected by vehicle thefts.
“Motorists should also do their part to ensure the safety of their vehicles,” she said.
“You must always ensure that your vehicle is locked, even if there are security guards in the parking lot.
“Never leave your valuables visible in the car – like on the front seat.”
Phatlane reminds residents to report crimes at their nearest police station or by calling 10111 or 112.
