The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) has warned people to desist from making fraudulent claims.
Three people were recently arrested in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal for making fraudulent claims.
UIF deputy director for risk management, anti-fraud and integrity, Sbongiseni Mpanza said fraudsters would be arrested and prosecuted.
“UIF has systems in place to detect fraud and officials in the labour centres have been capacitated to detect possible fraud,” he said.
Anyone who has knowledge of fraudulent activity can report it to the fund on 08600-22-194 or by sending an email to fraud@labour.gov.za.
He said people who were eligible to apply for UIF were unemployed workers registered as work seekers.
According to the department’s website, people who wished to apply for benefits must bring the necessary documents to their nearest labour centre.
“They must submit a copy of their 13-digit bar-coded ID or passport, fill the UI-2.8 and UI-19 forms and proof of registration as a work-seeker,” the department has said.
