Former top cop walks free in Pretoria
Magistrate Nicola Setshoege dismissed the application, and the State dropped the case.
Criminal charges have been withdrawn against former acting police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane and his wife Beauty.
This happened when they were back in the Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria on Thursday on fraud and corruption charges
Phahlane and his wife appeared alongside co-accused Durand Snyman.
The State applied for a three-month postponement “to charge more suspects”.
Magistrate Nicola Setshoege dismissed the application upon which the State withdrew the charges.
“The application for postponement would be prejudicial for the accused,” said Setshoege.
The three first appeared in court earlier this year and were released on R10 000 bail each.
Phahlane and his wife were accused of taking bribes from police supplier Keith Keating of Forensic Data Analyst.
It is alleged Keating bought cars for the Phahlanes from car dealer Snyman as a bribe to secure police tenders when Phahlane was head.
Keating is reported to have made payments into Durand’s account under the name John Doe.
Keating, who has not yet been charged, had won a R1 billion contract with the police.
