UPDATE: Investigation almost complete at ‘noisy’ west church

LISTEN: “The form is almost finished and we should submit it by next week.”

An investigation by the metro into a “noisy” church in the west of Pretoria is almost complete.

As part of the investigation, Proclamation Hill residents were asked to fill in a form with details about noise at the church.

“The form is almost finished and we should submit it to the metro by next week,” resident Sonja Theron said.

A lawyer handling the case on behalf of residents, Thesigan Pillay, said the case would be taken to the magistrate’s court if “the necessary feedback from the municipality is not received”.

The metro could not be reached for comment at the time of going to print.

Pillay added that it was important to recognise the right to practice religion.

“With that in mind, when practicing religion, it needs to be done responsibly without disturbing nearby residents,” he said.

“The church in question should take that into consideration.”

Rekord previously reported how noisy services at the church – involving drums, fireworks and screaming – were driving locals around the bend.

“Even if we close all the windows and turn the television’s volume up, we can still hear the church,” Theron said.

“On Friday evenings, the church usually starts and only finishes late on Sunday.

Sometimes they even have services on weekdays.

I wish they would be more considerate when making such a noise into the late and early hours.”

The church could not be reached for comment.
