UPDATE: Tighter security at Grove Mall

“The mall’s security company and the police will be working together to ensure safety.”

Security will be stepped up at The Grove Mall in the east of Pretoria after a string of robberies at the centre.

Police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said police and centre management discussed the matter on Thursday.

“The meeting was fruitful and we will soon be implementing the plans to intensify security,” he said

“The mall’s security company and the police will be working together to ensure safety.”

On Wednesday morning, electronics store at the mall was robbed of 40 laptops when five armed men gained entry through the store’s back entrance.

The store manager and security guard were assaulted.

A few days earlier, a jewellery store was targeted by four armed men who gained entry by breaking a window with a pickaxe.

They took off with some jewellery, said Sepato.

“The cluster task team, which specialises in crimes such as armed robbery and house robbery are investigating.”

Sepato said no arrests had been made yet.

The mall’s management confirmed the security meeting with the police and said it would not release more statements on the matter.
