About 18 dog poisonings have reported in Pretoria North this week alone.
Most of these happened in Theresapark, Dorandia and Tileba, said police spokesperson Captain Theunis Smit.
“All these dogs were poisoned over a period of only three days and we suspect with the deadly Temik or better known as Two-step,” said Smit.
“This is very serious. It’s imperative that the community should be aware and keep a lookout for suspects who might be poisoning dogs.”
Smit said Temik was a powerful tool used by burglars to silence their canine victims.
“Killing the dogs that might alert house owners to intruders on their property, is the easiest way for burglars to make sure they won’t get caught.”
Temik contains the active substance Aldicarb, which is a carbamate insecticide.
This pesticide is meant to be used for agricultural purposes as it is effective against a number of pests that can destroy plants.
Unfortunately, it is now bought and sold illegally to criminals using it to kill animals.

Smit said anyone found in possession of Temik would be arrested, unless able to prove it was being used for agricultural purposes.

Smit said residents should be on the lookout for strangers loitering in their neighbourhoods.
Certainly linked to the dog poisonings was a problem of vehicle theft in the north of Pretoria.
“Residents must make sure that vehicles, especially motorcycles, are not in plain view for anyone to see from the street,” said Smit.
“Don’t leave the packaging of expensive goods, like plasma TV boxes, out on the curb. It is not sensible to ‘advertise’ what valuables you keep at home.”
