Pretoria North police have sought to boost crime awareness after a number of thefts and dog poisonings in the area.
Spokesperson Captain Theunis Smit said the campaign saw pamphlets being distributed in several neighbourhoods.
“One of the more important messages we share with residents is to ‘know your neighbour’,” said Smit.
“It’s important to know what vehicles your neighbours drive so that you would be able to spot strange vehicles in the street.”
Smit said thieves often scoped the area to find easy targets.
“Motorbikes and bicycles should always be locked up properly and never within view from the street,” he advised.
“Residents should join their local community watch groups and CPFs and always report suspicious people loitering in the streets.”
No fewer than 18 dogs have been poisoned in the north over a period of only three days.

Most of the poisonings were reported in Theresapark, Dorandia and Tileba.
Vehicle thefts and burglaries added to residents’ woes.
Smit said vehicle-related thefts were especially concerning.
“About five car thefts were reported this week,” he said.
“Although there had not been so many burglaries, it remains a concern – especially after the recent number of dogs that had been poisoned.”
An elderly resident from said she feared for her safety after her neighbours had become the victims of thieves.
“I live alone,” the woman said, wishing to remain anonymous for fear that she could be targeted by criminals.
“This week thieves stole a boy’s bike in the street where I live,” she said.
“The next thing I heard was that two of my neighbours’ dogs have been poisoned.”
