Sinoville police arrest taxi driver, confiscate stolen cables
Heaps of copper cables were found inside the taxi.
Police are on the hunt for suspected cable thieves in the north, after arresting a taxi driver and confiscating a vehicle full of copper cables.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, a Toyota Avanza taxi was pulled over in Sefako Makgatho (Zambezi) Drive by members of the metro police.
Sinoville police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk, said as soon as the vehicle was stopped, several people jumped out of it and fled the scene.
“Four to five men fled from the scene on foot,” said Van Dyk.
“Unfortunately, they managed to escape from police. Only the driver of the vehicle was apprehended.”
Van Dyk said the taxi was full of copper cables.
“No estimate was given just how many cables were found yet.”
The driver was arrested for being in possession of stolen goods.
“Under the criminal amendment act, being in possession of stolen power cables is a serious crime,” said Van Dyk.
“Cable theft causes damage to the city’s infrastructure and therefore it is not to be taken lightly.”
Van Dyk praises the police officers who recovered the stolen copper cables.
“Police are still on the hunt for the other suspects who fled the scene.”
