UPDATE: Francois to be laid to rest

"He was also a good friend and will be dearly missed."

A young Pretoria shooting victim will be laid to rest on Thursday after he died in hospital last week.

Francois Swart (21) will be buried from the NG Kerk Florauna in the north of Pretoria at 11:00.

Family friend Kobie Gordon described him as a good child who cared for other people.

“He was also a good friend and will be dearly missed.”

Swart was wounded when he and a friend stopped to buy drinks at a petrol station in Lichtenburg in North West on 9 May.

A stranger walked up to him and shot him twice in the neck from close range.

His mother Kristi van Rooyen earlier said the two friends saw two men arguing with the cashier while waiting to pay.

“Then one turned around, walked straight to my son and shot him twice at close range in the neck without saying anything,” she said.

“He has been in a medically induced coma since his admission, and we kept hoping for the best.”

He was treated in Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
