UPDATE: Death, arrest after accident during north police chase

"They hit another car while they were fleeing from the police."

A passenger in the reportedly stolen vehicle that smashed into another during a police chase, has died in hospital.

“He died in hospital on Sunday,” Akasia police spokesperson Constable Matsobane Mabusela said.

The man was rushed to Doctor George Mukhari hospital in Ga-Rankuwa for medical attention after the collision in Chantelle, north of Pretoria, earlier on Sunday.

Police were patrolling the area when they spotted a maroon VW Touareg reported stolen in Kempton Park.

The chase ended with the driver of the Touareg crashing into another vehicle on the corner of First Avenue and Boshoff Street.

The driver was arrested but a second passenger escaped.

Police dismissed social media claims that one of the alleged hijackers was shot by officers in a police helicopter.

CDPF Akasia SAPS forum chairperson Tienie Vorster was, however, adamant that “the chopper shot down at the car”.

Vorster said the occupants of the other vehicle involved in the collision escaped without injury, but were “traumatised” by their experience.
