Duo arrested in the north for stealing train cables
This interfered with electric overhead power supply for trains.
Two men were caught selling cables stolen from Metrorail by the railway’s crime prevention team in Mabopane on Wednesday, the company said.
“Metrorail’s N1 crime prevention team, working with Mabopane railway police, arrested two suspects during a search at a scrapyard near Mabopane train station,” said spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng.
Mofokeng said the pair was found in possession of 264 rail clips and 264 spring locks and eight steel cable coverings.
“Both suspects were detained at Loate SAPS. The owner of the scrapyard was not available at the time of the arrest,” she said.
Mofokeng blamed delays for commuters on criminals vandalising and stealing “critical infrastructure components”.
This interfered with electric overhead power supply for trains, she said.
