VIDEO: Sinkhole repairs in Clubview – after nearly 3 years

“The nightmare will soon be over.”

Repair work has finally begun on a massive sinkhole in Clubview Centurion – nearly three years after it made its appearance.

“The Clubview community had been very patient with this massive sinkhole,” said Ward 66 councillor Ina Strijdom.

“It is a relief to see that something is happening now.”

Repairs on the sinkhole began in May after a budget for it has finally been approved.

The repairs are expected to be complete by the end of August this year.

Strijdom said it hasn’t been easy for residents having to make use of alternative routes to drop their children off at school, going to work and so forth.

“The nightmare will soon be over,” she said.

Several sinkholes formed over the past year in various neighbourhoods across Centurion, including Valhalla, Laudium, Erasmia and Lyttelton.

In March, a truck loaded with bricks fell into a newly formed sinkhole on the corner of Bodenstein and Eli Streets in Erasmia.

There are six sinkholes in Erasmia alone.

Two more sinkholes formed after the heavy rain earlier this year in ward 57 in Tieroog Street and at the corner of Burger and River Streets.

Other sinkholes in this ward are at the intersection of Cradock and Warren Streets as well as the Gerhard Street and Jean Avenue intersection.

A new sinkhole in Stephanus Schoeman Road in Valhalla had social media abuzz when a car fell into it. This sinkhole was determined to be the responsibility of the Department of Public Works. Recently Valhalla had two additional sinkholes.

In ward 65, a new sinkhole was discovered on Alexandra Road in Irene in March.
