Wife killer’s parole meets opposition
“The family are highly perturbed and not ready for his release."
The Department of Correctional Services has applied for the review of a wife killer’s parole.
Spokesperson Mocheta Monama said the parole board had on 20 April decided to release Omar Sabadia on parole on 20 June.
Sabadia was sentenced to 50 years in 1998 for the kidnapping and murder of his wife Zahida Sabadia.
“The department has taken the decision to apply for the matter [parole board decision] to be referred to the parole review board,” said Monama adding that Sabadia had been considered for parole several times since reaching his mandated minimum detention period.
“Whenever an offender reaches this minimum detention period, their profile is forwarded to the parole board.”
Ahmed Suliman of MacRobert Incorporated Attorneys, Sabadia’s daughters’ lawyer, told Rekord the family was also seeking the review.

Legally, a review suspends the parole decision.
Suliman said on Tuesday he had received an undertaking by the review board that Sabadia would therefore not be released on 20 June pending its review.
He said the family had at previous hearings objected to Sabadia’s parole but this time was unable to because it was not notified of the hearing.
“Notice of a 30 April hearing was given but the family was not available to attend,” said Suliman.
“So it suggested an alternative of 10 May to which the board did not respond.
Instead, the parole board proceeded with a hearing on 20 April without notice.
The family is highly perturbed and not ready for his release.”
He said the family felt Sabadia must at least serve half his prison time “four years of which still remains”.
