Private security staff linked to railway crime – Metrorail
“Working together we can restore a predictable train service and maintain a safe railway system.”
Employees of private security companies have been fingered for their involvement in railway-related crimes, Metrorail has said.
“We have established that criminals who damage our properties are people employed by different security companies,” Metrorail’s Gauteng provincial manager Goodman Matampi said.

Matampi said criminals who worked for security companies would be reported to the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (Psira), where their registration could be revoked.
“A number of engagements with stakeholders are scheduled from this week to ensure that this process is implemented without compromise,” he said.
Theft of Metrorail infrastructure, such as cables and rail clips, delays the company’s services. This in turn affects millions of commuters who rely on the railway system daily.

“Criminals are vandalising and stealing critical infrastructure components. These include to a large extent cable theft which interferes with electric overhead power supply for train movement and malicious damage to property,” Matampi said.
He said Gauteng Metrorail management had taken a stance against these criminals and would ensure that employers of such individuals were notified of those arrested while under their employment.

The company urged commuters to report any forms of vandalism witnessed while within Metrorail’s operating environment to ensure that criminals were speedily brought to book.
