VIDEO: Plans to expand Centurion Cemetery

Zwartkop residents recently met with their local ward councillor to discuss plans for the expansion of the nearby Centurion Cemetery.
The cemetery is said to be full and plans are afoot to expand it by 6.7 hectares. The planned expansion would increase the cemetery’s capacity by between 300 and 400 percent.
Security was foremost on residents’ minds at the meeting, which was held on Saturday.
“I think that we are all in agreement that the current state of having an open piece of land is becoming a security risk,” said ward 78 councillor Peter Sutton.
Among the security measures discussed were a 24-hour guard and a brick wall around the cemetery, with only a single entrance at Edward Street.

Also discussed were features to cater for a range of religious beliefs, including the construction of a crematorium and a so-called “wall of remembrance”.
This will “improve the cemetery’s cultural relevance”, said Sutton.
Hellen Mlotshwa, of Nzumbululo Holdings, also spoke to residents about the environmental assessment impact study the company did regarding the planned expansion.
The environmental study is just one of several studies that must be completed before work can begin on the planned expansion.
Sutton told Rekord he expected the expansion project to be finished by the end of the year.
