Pretoria man nabbed for multiple rapes

“While driving to their destination, he would deviate, pounced on them and drag them to secluded areas and rape them."

An alleged serial rapist linked to several crimes around Pretoria was arrested in Limpopo earlier this month.

Lenare Loostercia Tshepo Makena (35) appeared in the Nebo magistrate’s court on six charges of rape on Monday, according to police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe.

Ngoepe said the suspect, who was also a taxi owner, targeted victims aged between 14 and 23 by offering them lifts at night using a taxi or private vehicles.

“While driving to their destination, he would deviate, pounced on them and drag them to secluded areas and rape them. In some instances, the ordeal would take place inside the vehicle.

“This suspect was unknown because he was faceless to his victims and thought he had perfectly covered his tracks.”

Makena was denied bail and his cases were postponed to 26 June 2018 for further bail application and police investigations.

Ngoepe said Makena was linked to four other crimes in Pretoria, including business burglaries and robberies in Sunnyside, Soshanguve, Sinoville and Brooklyn.

“A well-coordinated intelligence-driven operation succeeded in tracing this serial rapist who has been terrorising women around Rakgoadi, Nebo and Sonnoville policing areas in the Groblersdal cluster between the years 2014 and 2017,” he said.

Ngoepe said Makena was once arrested in 2017 in Soshanguve for burglary but was later released.
