Villieria police to prioritise gender crimes

The Villieria police have dedicated this year to the fight against crimes against women, children and other vulnerable groups.
Spokesperson Captain Coba Brits said the police would always fight crime but this year would put these crimes at the top of the priority list.
She said strict steps must be taken against perpetrators who tormented children, women, the elderly, people with disabilities, people with the albinism and the LGBTI community.
“The scourge of violence against these groups cannot and will not be tolerated,” she said.
“We also call upon all police officers to assist in the fight against women and children abuse.”

Brits said in the police minister’s budget speech, the minister had reaffirmed the police to the pursuit of a society in which women and children enjoyed their rights.
“They must be able to walk freely, without the fear of being confronted with the possibility of being murdered, raped or assaulted.
“It is the responsibility of all, including the police to root out these types of crimes,” Brits said.
Brits also urged residents to assist with information that could help the police locate the men – in identikits – suspected of robbery.
“We ask that residents contact us with any information that could lead to their arrest,” she said.
