Youth among those arrested on 16 June
Ten suspects were arrested for possession of illegal substances, firearms and stolen property.
More than 40 people – including youth – were arrested in Ga-Rankuwa for public drinking and drunk driving recently.
Police spokesperson Matthews Nkoadi said the arrests occurred during a weekly crime prevention operation at the weekend.
A total of 47 people, of all ages, was arrested, “but more than 80 percent of the arrests were for public drinking and drunk driving”.
Ten suspects were arrested for possession of illegal substances, firearms and stolen property.
“Our men and women in blue were once again involved in a disruptive operation, to address all crimes around Ga-Rankuwa,” said Nkoadi.
He said the operation included roadblocks and stop and searches.
“Suspects arrested included those sought for house robbery, armed robbery, assault with intent to cause bodily harm, shoplifting, possession of stolen property, fraud, common assault, transgression of the immigration act, contravention of protection orders, malicious damage to property, theft, housebreaking and possession of drugs among others.”
The local ANC youth league said it was disappointed there were still young people who did not understand the significance of June 16 – the day most youths were arrested.
“It is very unsettling that, as we commemorate Youth month, some of our youth do not understand the significance of this important day, and end up being arrested for doing the wrong things,” the league said in a statement.
“Issues around young people need to be addressed by ensuring they remain in school, have sustainable extra-mural activities to keep them occupied and that their home environment is one where they are able to thrive and receive sufficient guidance.
“Some of these are aspects that the government can and should be involved in, but a lot of what needs to be done starts at home,” the league said.
“A movement to educate, protect and nurture our young people who are essentially our future must be made to change the trend of youth crime happening in our city.”
