38 nabbed in weekend east swoop
SAPS clamped down hard on drug- and alcohol-related crimes.
Anti-crime operations conducted at the weekend by the Tshwane central cluster police yielded the arrests of 38 suspects.
This is according to SAPS spokesperson Captain Collette Weilbach.
The operation saw two suspects arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms; four for possession of suspected stolen property; two for theft out of a motor vehicle; and one for hijacking.
Weilbach said police clamped down hard on drug and alcohol-related crimes with a total of 11 arrests made for drug-related offences; while four motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Other arrests were made for domestic violence, theft, assault and fraud.
Weilbach said such joint crime prevention operations, awareness campaigns, roadblocks and high police visibility inside malls and on the streets would continue throughout June.
All those arrested appeared in the Hatfield community and Pretoria magistrate’s courts on Monday.
Part of the operation was a social crime prevention awareness campaign at Menlyn Park shopping centre to celebrate youth day on Saturday.
This was done in conjunction with the SAPS Tshwane band, Brooklyn CPF and community partnerships such as ERA Real Estate and private security companies that are part of the Brooklyn security forum.
“All these role-players make the safety of young people a priority. Young people have the right to be cared for and to feel safe,” said Weilbach.
Shoppers also got the chance to interact with police officers and CPF members on safety issues while children and young people were entertained by the SAPS band, a magic show, face painting and fingerprint taking.
Weilbach urged residents to report any suspicious persons, vehicles (especially ones without number plates) to the police immediately by phoning the 10111 emergency number.
