Dog poisoning comes to the Moot
Seven cases were recently reported in Waverley, Kilnerpark and Queenswood.
As many as seven cases of dog poisoning have been reported in the Moot over the past few weeks, a private security company says.
The poisonings were reported in Kilnerpark, Waverley and Queenswood
“Residents should be extra vigilant,” said Fidelity ADT community manager Gerrit Rheeder.
“Usually we see a spate of house robberies following incidents of dog poisonings.”
“We all need to work together to ensure these properties are secure,” he said, adding residents must report any suspicious activities to either the police or Fidelity ADT.
“Guard dogs are a great early warning system and, sadly, are targeted when criminals want to gain access to a property,” he said.
Rheeder offers the following security tips for local residents:
– Test your alarm and make sure it is in working order.
– Ensure you set your alarm when you are away from the house. Arm specific zones of your house, which are not being used when you are at home.
– Cut any trees or bushes that can be used by criminals to climb over your gate, wall or fence.
– Check that your perimeter security has not been tampered with. Ensure any damages are repaired immediately.
– Inform your domestic worker and gardener that dogs have been poisoned. Encourage them to be on the lookout for any suspicious individuals.

Villieria police spokesperson Captain Coba Brits said no dog poisoning cases had yet been reported at the police station as of late.
The SPCA could not be reached for comment at the time of going to print.
Rekord reported last week that 16 dogs had been poisoned since the beginning of the month in Booysens.
Residents quickly took matters into their own hands.
One of the residents, Tanita Venter said they patrol streets on foot every morning and evening to search for “markers” commonly used by criminals before they hit a property.
She said when a dog is poisoned, it is usually at a house where there is a motorcycle.
“Recently, it has become so bad that they only poison the dogs and do not steal anything,” she said.
Residents in the area have also hired security companies to help them patrol the streets.
“We can phone them at any time of the day and they will help where they can,” she said.
