VIDEO: New Centurion taxi rank will restore commuters’ dignity
“The conditions commuters have to endure at the current facility is inhumane and no one should be allowed to endure them.”
A brand new taxi rank on the corner of Hendrik Verwoerd Drive and South Street will “go a long way in restoring the dignity of Centurion commuters”.
This is according to DA ward 78 councillor Peter Sutton, who expects construction to be concluded year-end around November. The finished rank is estimated to be in the R20-million range.

Given the state of neglect at the current taxi rank, residents were growing increasingly worried.
“The conditions commuters must endure at the current facility is inhumane,” said Sutton. “No one should be allowed to endure them.”

He said that the people of Centurion and taxi associations can together ensure that the new taxi rank is safe, up to standard and integrated into the area.
“We are not oblivious to the many challenges facing the taxi industry, but we are committed to working with the industry to ensure a better and safer environment for all.”
Region 4 informal traders chairperson Philemon Mofamate said he hoped the new facility would improve conditions for traders. These traders must currently use cardboard boxes and crates to conduct their businesses. However, the new facility will provide them with actual stalls from which to sell goods.
A similar system has already been implemented with great success at the Centurion Mall.
