UPDATE: Doringkloof safety workshop for domestic workers

Domestic workers in the Doringkloof, Centurion, area have been encouraged to avoid walking alone in the streets in the light of increasing crime in the area.
During safety workshop held on Wednesday at the NG Church in Doringkloof domestics were highlighted about crime incidents in the area.
Speaker Chris Erasmus told the more than 150 domestic workers who attended that they should walk in groups to and from work.
“I know that it is winter and it gets dark soon but try and walk in the daytime,” Erasmus said.
Residents in the Doringkloof area have become increasingly concerned about the safety of the workers after several instances of crime were reported. In one such instance, a domestic worker lost her life after she was stabbed in Bashee Avenue.
Workers were also encouraged not to wear expensive jewellery or to use earphones when walking as this could attract criminals.
Marian Sieberhagen of Doringkloof care told Rekord that as some people were not able to attend, the organisation had decided to host more workshops in the coming months.
“We started to organise the event last week Friday and only expected about 10 or 20 people. We said to ourselves if 10 people attend we will be glad to help and then more than 150 people arrived today,” Sieberhagen said.
The domestic workers who attended were eager to learn safety tips and will continue to receive support from Doringkloof care as well as its neighbourhood watch component.
