Labour department warns against a job and solar panel scam 'involving' the department.
The Department of Labour has warned young people not to fall victim to scams doing the rounds on social media, promising young people job opportunities.
Labour department spokesperson Teboho Thejane said the department has been made aware of a scam doing the rounds with fake information on social media platforms.

“The department of labour has noted a poster [bearing] its logo which is making rounds on social media platforms, informing unemployed youth to take their particulars to any office for construction learnership opportunities on 22 June 2018,” he said.

Thejane said the department does not have such opportunities currently.
“We would like to inform the public that it does not have such an activity planned as indicated on the poster at any of their offices nationwide,” he said.

“The department apologises for any inconvenience that may arise from this unfortunate hoax.”
The department said it was also “stunned” earlier this month by complaints from the public regarding the request for quotation for procurement of solar panels.
It said businesspeople were also scammed into believing there was a tender within the department.

“The modus operandi has been that the fraudsters use the department of labour’s coat of arms (logo), address, the name of the building and the contact details of officials as attraction to trap unsuspecting members of the public,” said the department’s anti-fraud and corruption unit.
The unit said people are urged to exercise utmost caution by verifying any request for quotations with the department before responding.
