Activities included roadblocks, stop and searches and police visibility.

More than 40 people were arrested in a weekend crime prevention operation in Ga-Rankuwa, police said on Monday.

Police spokesperson Captain Matthews Nkoadi said the arrests were for offences including rape, assault and housebreaking.

Some of the suspects were arrested for dealing in drugs; possession of dagga; assault with intent to cause bodily harm; contravention of the immigration act; shoplifting; malicious damage to property; theft; assault common; contravention of protection orders; public violence; possession of stolen motor vehicle; driving and drinking and failing to appear in court among others.

“In total, we arrested 47 people,” said Nkoadi.

He said the men and women in blue were involved in a disruptive operation, to address all crimes around Ga-Rankuwa when they arrested the suspects.

“Activities included roadblocks, stop and searches and police visibility around our policing area,” he said.

He said those arrested were expected to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Monday and Tuesday, while illegal immigrants would be deported by the department of home affairs.

“We urge our communities to contact our crime stop number 08600-10111 to report any crime at all times.”
