The union kicks off its national strike to demand higher salaries today.

Shoprite workers embarked on a national strike today to demand higher wages.
Workers – affiliated to the National Transport Movement (NTM) union embarked on a “shutdown” of Shoprite and all its subsidiaries to demand a salary increase of between R12 000 – R15 000.
“The National Transport Movement in collaboration with EFF (Economic Freedom Front) will embark on a total shutdown of all Shoprite, Checkers, U-Save and Hungry Lion stores with effect from 27 June 2018,” the union said in a statement.

The union said its members employed by Shoprite and Checkers at the Centurion distribution centre have been on strike since last month.
“Workers are demanding minimum basic salary R12 500 (for warehouse workers) and R15 000 (for drivers), plus introduction of provident fund, medial aid and 13th cheque.”
NTM said some workers were currently being paid R400 per week.
“Shoprite/Checkers, its subsidiaries and labour brokers were paying some employees only R400 per week, a poverty wage that workers have rejected with contempt.”
