A Mamelodi man who murdered his ex-girlfriend in front of her four-year-old daughter has been jailed for life.
Phineus Mampane (35) was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Lindiwe Eva Sangweni (35) and an additional five years for violating a protection order on Wednesday.
Mampane was arrested by schoolchildren and locals in Mamelodi West section D6 after he had stabbed Sangweni to death with a knife on 24 May last year.
Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said Mampane had followed the woman to her sister’s house in Mamelodi West where he killed her.
Locals heard a noise and when they went into the room to investigate, apparently found Mampane disembowelling the woman.
Her brother Thulani Khumalo said Sangweni was murdered in full view of her four-year-old daughter.
“They were no longer a couple and she had obtained a protection order against him.”
He said his sister was a loving person “who would not harm a fly”.
“She will be missed by her family and the community.”
Sister Nomvula Khumalo said she was happy with the jail term Judge Bert Bam had imposed on Mampane.
“We are not sure what he would have done if he was released early because his family has been trying to bail him out all along.”
She said the family were disturbed by the gruesome murder, but happy that she had finally received justice.
Maheso said credit had to go to members of the community, in particular, the learners at Vlakfontein secondary and Modiri technical, who chased the suspect and called the police. He commended them for not taking the law into their own hands.
“Investigating officer Warrant Officer Riaan Cloete who worked tirelessly and diligently by putting up objective evidence which led to the conviction must be commended as well,” said Maheso.

He said the sentence was a sign that the law viewed domestic violence as a serious crime and must serve as a warning to potential offenders.
