Police are yet to arrest the culprits behind the taxi violence and shoot-out between two rival taxi associations in the Tshwane CBD on Thursday morning.
“We’re still investigating,” police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said.
Several people were said to have been injured and some taxis burnt during the altercation, which took place at the corner of Madiba and Sisulu streets.
“The five [who were] injured were taken for treatment and two taxis were also burnt,” Kweza said.

The violence was allegedly a result of an on-going feud between the Mamelodi and Menlyn taxi associations over one of their routes.
“The fight is over the Hatfield route,” said Mxoloisi Ragalakane, an executive member of the Menlyn Taxi Association.
“Mamelodi taxis want to take over the Hatfield part of Menlyn Taxi Association’s route.”
He claimed that the feud had been on-going for some time as members of his taxi association had received death threats in the past.

Tshwane MMC for roads and transport Shiela Lynn Senkubuge condemned the violence.
“No amount of violence can resolve disputes,” she said.
“Operators should desist from acts of violence each time they have differences, unnecessarily endangering the lives of commuters and other people.”
Mamelodi Amalgamated Taxi Association was not immediately available for comment.
