Spruce up for Irene station on Mandela day
“We want to make this a regular occurrence in Irene and perhaps even something that happens at least once a month.”

Some Irene residents spent their 67 minutes for Mandela day tidying up the train station and painting a mural on a dilapidated wall.
This was part of a project launched by business owners and community members near the Railways café in Irene.
Residents said four houses, which belong to Prasa but are occupied by homeless people at the train station, have become an eyesore and also saw an increase of criminal elements in the area.
As part of the project, the less fortunate in the area were invited to help clean and paint after which they were presented with vouchers for food and clothing from the Street store, which was present on the day.

Ward councillor Gert Visser said that the goal of Wednesday’s Mandela day clean-up was not only to get the community involved in increasing the area’s beauty, but also to ensure that everyone lends a hand in uplifting the area.
“We want to keep up this initiative to ensure that these houses are returned to their previous state,” said Visser.
“Hopefully, this will also inspire others to assist with projects such as this.”
He was happy with the community assisting and glad to see some of the people who stay in the houses lending a hand to clean the area.
TJ Bryant, owner of the Railways café, said the aim was to create an initiative which would be ongoing.
“We want to make this a regular occurrence in Irene and perhaps even something that happens at least once a month.”
