Mamelodi children kept busy with school holiday programme
Thandanani Drop Inn Centre's winter school programme ensures that children are occupied throughout the winter holidays with a variety of games and activities.
Thandanani Drop Inn Centre’s winter school programme keeps children busy with sport, art, singing, and fun activities for the next three weeks.
The centre looks after children while parents are at work for the duration of the school holiday, which runs from June 26–July 21.
Ntombizodwa Mhlanga from Thandanani Drop Inn Centre said they have a line-up of exciting programmes that keep them busy the entire day from 10:00–15:00.
Mhlanga said the activities they provide are aimed at removing children from the streets and danger during the school holidays.
“We always make sure children are dressed up warm and keep them busy… Every week we have different activities such as movie days where children relax, while watching…[a] movie in warm blankets and hot drinks, game days, creative days, crafts, cooking, art, a talent show and market day.
“The programme caters to learners from the age of five and upwards,” Mhlanga said.
The centre has teamed up with local stakeholders for the ongoing school holiday programme and keeps children busy with indigenous games, aerobics, board games, dressing like an employee, fashion shows, drama, art, and craft.
Parents are expected to sign children in on a registration form in the morning and out when they fetch them in the afternoon.
“The centre will give the children breakfast and also make sure they have a freshly cooked meal before going back to their loved ones.”
She further said the centre has a regular afternoon school programme, but the numbers have increased with parents bringing their children in during the school holidays.
“The programme is aimed at looking after the children, helping them with school work, and feeding them for free while their parents are still at work.”
Mhlanga added that the centre ensures children’s safety by working with the Mamelodi East CPF.
The centre is situated next to the Lehlabile community hall in Section SNS in Mamelodi East.
